At this time, all donations are being dedicated to the well project in Majok-Chediop, Yirol area, Lake State, South Sudan. Without a reliable source of fresh water, the people of the region remain at risk for various illnesses linked to polluted water, such as cholera, dysentery, and parasitic infections. In addition, though there is high interest in the school project, many children, especially young girls, bear the burden of gathering water for the family or livestock and must spend many hours each day walking miles through dangerous regions in search of water. Thus, the well is needed before the other projects can move forward.
The well in Majok-Chediop is anticipated to cost about $10,000 for a hand pump well (this includes site surveys and labor and materials). The village is very rural and lacks electricity. Therefore, a hand pump well is an appropriate low maintenance, reliable choice for delivering safe water. To date, RSSVP has raised about $7,000 toward the well project. With your support and generosity, we hope to begin securing permits and starting on the well construction in Spring 2012.
A second hand pump well will be needed solely for the use of the school, and will need to be dug before beginning construction of the school building. Thus, once the first well is installed and providing fresh water to the villagers, donations will be directed to construction of a second well.
Thank you to all supporters. You are saving lives.
