A Tribute to the Life of James Deng Chol Angok
By Abraham Madit Majak
Today, we gather not only to mourn the passing of James Deng Chol Angok, but to honor a life defined by courage, sacrifice, and a profound love for his people. James left us on Sunday in Juba, surrounded by family—just as he lived, with love around him and love flowing from him.
To those who knew him in Khartoum and El-Obeid, James was more than a relative, a friend, or a community member. He was a quiet pillar of strength. A man whose kindness was felt long before his story was known. And for many, it was only later that they learned the depth of the sacrifices he made.
As his nephew Madit Majak recalled, James once shared the difficult years he spent in Khartoum and El-Obeid—years marked by hardship, risk, and unwavering purpose. During that time, he worked closely with churches and humanitarian organizations, placing himself in danger to rescue South Sudanese children who had been sold into slavery.
James traveled to the very places where these children were held, often by those who sought to exploit their vulnerability. He smuggled them out with courage that few possess, sending them to safety in Northern Bahr el Ghazal under the protection of Gen. Paul Malong Awan.
His bravery did not come without great cost. Eventually, he was captured by the authorities—beaten, tortured, and imprisoned for many years. He spoke of moments when death seemed near, when hope could have faded. But he always said one thing with conviction: “God protected me.”
James survived not because the road was easy, but because his spirit was unbreakable. Because his heart was anchored in service. Because he believed that saving even one child’s life was worth every risk he faced.
Those who knew James will remember his humility, his gentleness, and the quiet strength that defined him. He never sought recognition. He never called himself a hero. Yet through his actions, he shaped lives, protected the vulnerable, and carried the weight of compassion as few ever could.
Today, we honor a man who lived for others. A man whose legacy will outlive pain, suffering, or the hardships he endured. A man whose name will be spoken with respect wherever those he saved continue to walk this earth.
Though James Deng Chol Angok is no longer with us, his memory remains powerful, and his spirit endures in the lives he touched.
May his courage inspire us.
May his kindness guide us.
And may his memory live with us forever.
Rest in peace, James. Your journey continues through all of us.
