Garang John Reappears Online After Months of Restricted Access
By: Abraham Madit Majak
Juba, South Sudan — South Sudanese journalist and activist Garang John has resurfaced online after nearly eight months of limited access, stating that he is “well and alive” despite what he described as significant pressure on his freedom of speech.
In a message to his followers on Thursday, Garang said his return to the platform — even under restrictions — signals progress in an ongoing legal dispute that has kept him out of the public space for months. He called on supporters to “keep praying” as the case approaches its final phase.
Garang, known for his outspoken criticism of governance and human rights issues in South Sudan, indicated that he plans to resume publishing investigations and commentary in the coming days. Without naming specific individuals, he accused certain leaders of undermining national institutions and restricting civic freedoms.
Quoting Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous words about the “arc of the moral universe,” Garang expressed confidence that accountability will eventually prevail. He also extended solidarity to families whose relatives are facing political persecution, urging them to remain hopeful as, in his words, “the misuse of the law for repression is gradually losing its grip.”
He concluded by calling on his network of sources and colleagues to reconnect as he prepares for what he described as “the next chapter.”
Authorities have not publicly commented on his renewed online presence or the status of his legal proceedings.
